I consider Aklan Mullaly's negative comments on the merits of rising the US CAFE standards only, as very valid !
The primary responsibility of making a responsible and fuel consumption related car buying choice, should stay with the consumer. Since most buyers require a significant financial incentive to contribute to that effort, I would suggest as an alternate to increasing the fuel tax, to consider an appropriate tax related to the vehicle weight as well as engine size/power and similar fuel consumption affecting features. This tax could be collected at the time of buying or re-newing your license plates, as has been done by many countries before, or any suitable alternative.

I believe, that Alan Mullaly's negative comments on the merits of raising the US CAFE standards are very valid, since it not only reduces the car buying publics choices, yet much more importantly, most car buyers need a significant financial incentive to contribute also to fuel consumption related buying choices !
